Electric power generation in Latvia up 4.1% in H1
Hydropower plants on the Daugava River generated 1,795 GWh of power in January-June 2020, up 58.3 percent from the same period a year ago, while small hydropower plants generated 49,908 MWh of electric power, or 54.1 percent more than a year ago.
Thermal power stations Rigas TEC-1, Rigas TEC-2, Rigas Siltums, Juglas Jauda and Fortum generated 745,005 megawatt hours (MWh) of power. In January-June 2020, power generation by the thermal power stations fell 39.4 percent year-on-year.
Biomass-fired power plants generated 201,267 MWh of power, down 5.9 percent. Combined heat-and-power (co-generation) plants generated 164,384 Mwh of electricity, down 26.7 percent on year, and power plants running on biogas generated 154,625 MWh of electricity, down 8.4 percent from the first six months of 2019.
Power generation by Latvia’s wind farms increased by 22.4 percent to 96,552 MWh and solar power stations generated 1,144 MWh of electricity, up 38 percent.
According to the Augstsprieguma Tikls report, electricity consumption in Latvia declined 3.7 percent year-on-year to 3,551 GWh in January-June 2020.
Augstsprieguma Tikls is an independent transmission system operator, which operates the electric power transmission network and ensures security of electric power supply in Latvia, as well as fulfills the following mission: providing power transmission services based on the published transmission service tariffs and providing free third-party access to the transmission network.
Augstsprieguma Tikls holds operational control of the transmission system and ensures its stable operation.
