During a remote emergency meeting today, Saulkrasti Region Council decided to overturn the council's decision, taken in 2016, approving in principle construction of a liquefied natural gas terminal at Skulte Port, reported LETA.

Today, 14 members of Saulkrasti Region Council voted in favor of the annulling the decision "On construction of liquefied natural gas terminal and gas pipeline from Skulte Port to Incukalns underground gas storage facility", while one council member abstained.

Council chairman Normunds Licis (Latvian Association of Regions) emphasized that the municipality could only support or reject the project after receiving the environmental impact assessment, because environmental protection was the most important aspect for the local government.

The municipality will inform the State Environmental Service and joint-stock company Skultes LNG Terminal about its decision.

Skulte Region Council's extraordinary meeting today was called at eight councilmen's initiative, based on a petition submitted by Skulte Region residents this past March, which urged the local government to overturn its July 2016 decision to support construction of the terminal, claiming that the terminal would be damaging to the environment.
