Lithuanian minister: Baltic agreement needed for investments in wind energy

European wind energy companies welcome Lithuania's efforts to increase the share of renewables in the total energy mix, but they view potential investments on a regional scale, Lithuanian Energy Minister Zygimantas Vaiciunas said, cites LETA/BNS.

"These companies look not only at the Lithuanian market, but also at the region's market and, in the long term, they are particularly interested in developing offshore wind energy and in Polish wind energy plans," Vaiciunas told BNS after meeting with the top executives of the sector's largest companies in Amsterdam earlier this week.

According to the minister, foreign businesses are interested in Lithuania's plans to build offshore wind power plants. The government is expected to make decisions on this within the next few years, but a regional agreement would help attract investment.

"It's important to emphasize that companies are interested in us as a region and that several hundred megawatts at sea would be expensive for one state. Cooperation among the Baltic countries could open up wider opportunities," he said.

Vaiciunas said that he had already discussed the possibility of cooperation in the development of offshore wind energy with his Estonian colleagues.
