"The long-term agreed solution is the regional LNG terminal to be built on the coast of the Gulf of Finland, which must be created according to market logic. The LNG terminal projects of the Baltic countries will probably be left out of the list of European projects of common interest currently being updated, which will reviewed once more in 2019," Leppiman said.

The Baltic countries have not managed to come to an agreement concerning the establishment of a regional LNG terminal and market. The basis for agreement in the most recent discussion was the regional LNG package, which would include the already functioning Klaipeda terminal, the planned terminal in Estonia and the Incukalns gas reservoir in Latvia.

However, the Latvian government did not support that agreement and wished to receive additional information and make a possible decision only next year. Lithuania Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis said that the project could receive EU funding only if the countries come to an agreement by October of this year.
