Latvian EcoMin: LNG terminal in Skulte would have advantage

BC, Riga, 17.07.2017.Print version
A liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Latvia’s Skulte port would have a great technological advantage, said Latvian Economics Minister Arvils Aseradens in an interview with LETA.

Speaking about the future of Klaipeda LNG terminal, the minister said that it is important to be aware of the declining natural gas consumption in the Baltic-Finnish gas market, and be aware of what infrastructure costs the Baltic states can afford.

"First, we highly appreciate the fact that Lithuania has introduced this solution as it has neared us the free market sooner. Second, this solution is not the cheapest one. We should be confident that we have found the way to ensure LNG supplies in the cheapest way for all Baltic residents. Of course, there are surprises. During the last meeting of the prime ministers in Tallinn, Estonia unexpectedly announced about its own LNG terminal. The debate is open," said Aseradens.

Asked about a possible LNG terminal in Latvia, he said that one of the alternatives is a terminal in Skulte, it is in a short distance from Incukalns underground natural gas storage facility. "It would have a large technological advantage. However, speaking about the government’s involvement in the project, the government definitely is not ready for that. (..) If private investors wish to do it, we would support them," said the minister.
