CHP plant to be set up in Estonian Hiiumaa in collaboration with Japan

BC, Tallinn, 09.06.2016.Print version
An agreement on regional cooperation in green economy was set to be signed between the county government of Estonia's Hiiumaa Island and a Japanese company on June 9th, aimed at building a combined heat and power (CHP) station on Estonia's second largest island, reports LETA/BNS.

The tangible outcome of the collaboration would be the establishment of a small-size, multifunctional CHP plant in Hiiumaa using smart and environment-friendly solutions, the Hiiu county government said.

The plant would help improve the island's food and energy security. While the exact form of the output is still to be determined in collaboration between the two sides, the CHP plant's waste heat is expected to be used to grow food in greenhouses or heat water in the tanks of fish farms.

The cooperation also is expected to help promote business ties between Hiiumaa and Japan.

"We expect the cooperation and friendship ties to be set up with Japan to support the opportunities of Hiiumaa in sustainable and innovative development, along with the implementation in our partnership of new environment-friendly technologies that will help to add value to the local resource," the county government said.

The Estonian coordinator of the project is the Innovative Manufacturing Engineering Systems Competence Center (IMECC). The importer of Japanese technology and the main coordinator of the project is the company on Estlanding OU.

Different regions of Japan are represented in the project by the company Your Energy Development Co Ltd, a developer of new innovative technologies.

The projects' Japanese partner brings together the Nasunogahara Power Plant, Tochigi Prefecture, Genryu University, the town of Minakami, Gunma Prefecture, Setouchi Resource Center, Kagoshima Prefecture and Amami Oshima Island, all of which have authorized Noriyoshi Konzo, president of Your Energy Development Co. Ltd, to act as their representative.
