Over 15,000 signatures collected in Lithuania against Belarus' NPP

Over 15,000 Lithuanian citizens have already supported a legislative initiative aimed at barring access for electricity from a nuclear power plant under construction in Belarus, which amounts to almost one-third of the minimum 50,000 signatures that are expected to be collected by July 9th, informs LETA/BNS.

The opposition Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats in early May began to collect signatures in support of a law that would obligate Lithuania not to purchase electrical energy generated at the Astravyets facility and not to use its national grid for transmitting Belarusian electricity.

Vilnius is the strongest critic of the Astravyets project, saying that Belarus fails to ensure safety at the plant that is being built just 20 kilometers from its border with Lithuania. Minsk rejects Lithuania's criticism, saying that it will ensure the highest safety standards at the facility.

Lithuania's parliament in early May passed a resolution calling on the government to take all the necessary diplomatic, legal and technical measures to stop the construction of the unsafe nuclear power plant in Belarus.
