BC, Vilnius, 13.05.2016.Print version
Lithuania's parliament passed a resolution on the hazard of the unsafe Astravyets Nuclear Power Plant under construction in Belarus some 50 km from Vilnius – a signal is sent to Belarus that Lithuania will not import electricity produced in the facility, informs LETA/BNS.

With the document, the parliament urged the government to take the necessary diplomatic, legal and technical measures to bring the Astravyets construction to a halt.

The government is also asked to state its opinion to Belarus in an immediate, strong and categorical manner that the Astravyets plant would not be allowed to use the Lithuanian power system and its reserve capacities, furthermore, will not import or sell electricity generated at the Belorussian plant.

The Seimas authorized the government to take the steps without delay and submit a specific action plan by June 1.

The Astravyets safety will be on the agenda of the meeting between European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius next month.
