Eesti Energia's Jordan project stuck behind red tape in China

BC, Tallinn, 29.04.2016.Print version
Estonia's state-owned energy group Eesti Energia has reached agreement with new investors as regards equity and investor structure of its Jordanian oil shale-fired power plant project but the process is stalled behind Chinese authorities, informs LETA/BNS.

"With regard to the Jordanian project, equity conditions have been agreed with the new investor and there is an agreement on the future investor structure as well. Things are at present stuck behind Chinese institutions," Eesti Energia CEO Hando Sutter said at a press conference.

The company is working in close cooperation with the Estonian embassy and making active efforts itself to get things moving, Sutter said. "Political support for us is fairly strong [in China], as this project has importance to the Chinese as well," he noted.

In Sutter's words, the bureaucratic process is nonetheless long and deadlines are difficult to predict. "But we're actively working on it," he added.

Eesti Energia still wishes to exit the project and hand over its management to the new investor after selling its majority stake, the CEO said.
