A team from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have praised Lithuania for its active engagement in strengthening the global nuclear safety regime, transparent and open cooperation with experts, and participation in international support programs, reports LETA/BNS.

Ingemar Lund, head of the Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) team, noted that Lithuania's infrastructure for nuclear safety and radiation protection, created after 1990, had "a relatively short history".

"Taking this into account, the legal and regulatory system and associated regulatory controls are remarkably well-developed, which is a significant achievement," Lund, senior adviser at the Office for International Relations at the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, said in a statement.

"The IRRS mission's recommendations and suggestions will contribute to further strengthening the nuclear safety and radiation protection infrastructure of Lithuania," he said.

It was the first IRRS mission to Lithuania. Its final report is to be provided to the Lithuanian government in about three months' time.
