Eesti Energia subsidiary has laid off hundreds workers

BC, Tallinn, 19.04.2016.Print version
Eesti Energia Tehnoloogiatoostus, technology arm of the state-owned Estonian energy group Eesti Energia, has cut a couple of hundred jobs and the majority of the remaining employees are working four days a week in the absence of orders, the regional newspaper Pohjarannik said, cites LETA/BNS.

As recently as in 2015, Eesti Energia Tehnoloogiatoostus employed a workforce of 609. The number of employees now is 425, and 56 people were made redundant in the first three and a half months of this year alone, Maia Burlaka, spokesperson for Eesti Energia, said.

Most of the remaining workers, or 258, are working four days a week under an arrangement initially in force from March 18 to the end of April. Those working a full week are the sales department, some workers of the design bureau and those workers of the construction division who are engaged in ongoing developments. There have been no extra days-off also at the service and testing units.

Burlaka said the number of employees has dropped first and foremost as a result of large-scale projects having come to an end. "The business of Tehnoloogiatoostus depends on the volume of orders. In 2014 the number of large-scale projects of Tehnoloogiatoostus grew and more people were hired as a result. By now the projects in oil shale industry that offered a big volume of work for several years have entered the final stretch and the company had to reckon with a reduction in the number of orders," she added.

Of the major orders that the company has for this year, the spokesperson named the manufacture and installation of a fuel feed system at a biomass fired plant at Aanekoski, central Finland, at a cost of approximately ten million euros.

"Tehnoloogiatoostus is actively taking part in tenders now, is searching for possibilities to find new orders and cooperation partners and maintain a long-time relationship with existing partners," she added.
