Piebalgs: gas prices in Latvia will likely increase, but expected to decrease later

BC, Riga, 03.09.2015.Print version
Former EU Energy Commissioner and current Unity politician Andris Piebalgs believes that gas prices in Latvia will likely increase in the coming years, but will most likely decrease later, informs LETA.

Piebalgs admitted that an increase in gas prices could take place at around the time when the gas market liberalization process is being implemented in Latvia, but that these processes are not connected with one another. The former commissioner said that ''gas prices will rise'' because the number of consumers continues to decrease, as well as gas consumption, meaning that the maintenance of infrastructure per one client has become more expensive. ''However, after the liberalization of the gas market, it is likely that gas prices will reduce,'' he said.

LETA also reported, earlier this year, the government approved the motion to break up the Latvian gas supply company Latvijas Gaze, ensuring the liberalization of the Latvian gas market from 2017.

The aim of the liberalization plan is to enhance the country's energy security, as well as allow third-parties access to the gas pipeline system, thus increasing competition in the gas market.
