Baltic States may choose Nordic states instead of Central Europe in linking energy systems

When desynchronising their energy systems from Russia, the Baltic states have planned to synchronise them with the Central Europe but Estonian main grid company Elering manager Taavi Veskimägi estimates that alternative options should be looked for because Poland does not show much activity regarding this project, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

Estonia has set a target to disconnect its energy system from Russia by 2025. Synchronization of it with Central Europe, however, can be prevented by the passiveness of Poland, said Veskimägi when introducing this year's electricity system supply reliability report.

"Poland is not very willing to join it today at the working level. This makes us concerned, and because our main goal is desynchronization, then my message is what we have discussed at length in Elering, that we have to seriously work on alternatives," said Veskimägi.

One alternative could be a separate Baltic synchronised region or synchronising the systems with the Nordic countries.

At least at the level of the governments, all member states of the European Union are supporting the project of the single energy market.

The European Commission's Climate and Energy Commissioner's Deputy Head of the Cabinet Pierre Schellekens said that all 28 member states gave strong support to it. "Yes, there may be different opinions, but in general, at the political level, the strong support of all member states can be seen to moving towards a more unified European energy policy," said Schellekens.

According to Veskimägi, the problems are not at the level of governments, but emerge when the projects are implemented in practice.
