Savickis: breaking up Latvijas Gaze should not be done in a hurry

Breaking up Latvijas Gaze should not be done in a hurry, believes Juris Savickis, the head of Itera Latvija, a co-owner of Latvijas Gaze, informs LETA.

He believes that hasty liberalization of the gas market is a deliberate attempt to undermine Latvia-Russia relations and the Russian company Gazprom, or to prevent some potential buyers from acquiring Latvijas Gaze shares as no investor will want to invest in a company that is likely to be involved in lengthy litigation.

Savickis believes that other potential buyers of Latvijas Gaze could be interested in faster division of the company as they hope that this could bring the price for the company's shares down. Likewise, it may be Western countries, including the United States, that wish to "set discord between Europe and Russia," Savickis said.

"Gazprom" has always taken into account Latvia's interests, as well as invested in Incukalns gas storage facility, diagnostics, etc., he said.

Today, the government is to review the Economy Ministry's report on liberalization of the natural gas market.

As reported, Latvijas Gaze largest shareholders are E.ON Ruhrgas, Gazprom (34%), and Itera Latvija (16%).
