A global consultation company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) released its ranking list QS World University Rankings by Subject 2014 which ranks the specialties of top universities in comparison with each other. Estonia makes the list with three specialties: the highest position (51–100) is maintained by the communication studies curriculum of the University of Tartu, modern languages, history and archaeology rank on places 151–200, Tartu University informed LETA.

Martin Hallik, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs says that the University of Tartu is ranking at the absolute top with an increasing number of specialties and the high academic level of the university receives continued international acknowledgement.

"The strong-performing specialties underline that we are the only university within the Baltic Republics in the top 3% of universities and 70% of internationally acclaimed Estonian researchers perform their research and teaching activities with us. This completes the image of the learning and research activity in the University of Tartu and should be a favorable one to future learners as well as current students of the university", Hallik comments happily.

From 2011, the worldwide university ranking QS World University Rankings compiled by QS also ranks universities on the basis of individual specialties. The aim of the QS World University Rankings by Subject is to provide the public with comparable data on the strengths of individual specialties.

The QS considers three indicators on compiling the rankings: the reputation of universities among researchers and employers and the number of citations on publications (the Scopus database is used as a source). The data on more than 3000 universities of the world was analyzed on the compilation of the 2014 release.

The University of Tartu is listed among the top three% of the most reputable universities (Times Higher Education) and the publications of the top one% of the most cited researchers of the University of Tartu cover 12 scientific fields at the same time (ESI).
