Usakovs proposes opening Chinese language distance learning center in Riga

During his visit to the Open University of China in Beijing today, Riga Mayor Nils Usakovs (Harmony Center) offered opening a regional Chinese language distance learning center in Riga, which could serve the entire Baltic region, LETA was informed by Usakovs' press secretary Anna Kononova.

It was agreed that the Riga City Council and the Open University of China will work jointly to implement this project.

 

Riga, the Freeport of Riga and private companies are interested in developing economic cooperation with China. However, the number of Chinese language specialists is insufficient. Therefore the cooperation with the Open University of China will be highly useful. Moreover, taking into account Riga's advantageous geographical location, the language center could work in the entire Baltic and Scandinavian regions, emphasized Usakovs.

 

3.3 million students are currently studying at the Open University of China. 500,000 graduate each year. The university specializes in distance learning.

 

As reported, Usakovs' visit to China will continue until July 2.
