The Toastmasters International Speech and Evaluation Competition in Riga will take place at the Architects House (Arhitektu nams, 11 Torņa iela, Riga, Latvia) on May 12, 2012 at 13:00. The event is jointly organized by the Riga Toastmaster Club, First Toastmasters of Vilnius and Toastmasters Tallinn. It will include an opening address by U.S. Ambassador to Latvia Judith G. Garber, a keynote speech by Finnish Toastmaster Tuire Vuolasvirta, a public speaking contest and a speech evaluation contest featuring contestants and judges Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, as well as supporters from these Toastmasters clubs and the general public.
“We are thrilled to be hosting the first international speech and evaluation contest in Riga”, says contest chair Rasa Aleksaitytė (Treasurer of First Toastmasters Club of Lithuania). She continues: “Just a few months ago we helped Riga Toastmasters with their first meeting and it’s great how quickly they have made progress with growing their organization. All local Toastmasters clubs all do a fantastic job of helping their members improve their communication skills, but bringing it to the international, competitive level is an exciting challenge.”
Toastmasters International was founded in the United States in 1924. It is a non-profit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of meetings, competitions and other events. Toastmasters International has more than 270,000 members in over 13,000 clubs in 116 countries. Members from all walks of life and countless professions learn to overcome their fear of public speaking by speaking to groups according to structured, yet self-paced sequence of speeches and working with others in a supportive environment.
