The newly-published "Chinese-Latvian Dictionary", created by Peteris Pildegovics of the University of Latvia's Asian Studies Department, is the first step in the creation of a Confucius Institute in Riga, LETA was told by University of Latvia Rector Marcis Auzins.

The institute will be a place offering teaching in Chinese language and culture, operating in a similar way to Germany's Goethe Institute.

The "Chinese-Latvian Dictionary" is a great investment in both education and in the future cooperation between the two countries. There is already great interest in studying Oriental languages among students of the University of Latvia, and the new dictionary will not only be a great help to those learning Chinese, but may also further increase the interest of the general public in Chinese language and culture.

At the presentation of the dictionary, Education and Culture Minister Tatjana Koke (ZZS) expressed hope that, thanks to the new publication, Latvians and Chinese citizens would soon communicate with each other not in English, but in Chinese.

The release of the dictionary is a significant event not only for Latvia, as this is the first academic dictionary in this language in any of the Baltic States, stressed Koke.

The dictionary was compiled by Pildegovics alone over a period of eight years, and has been released in an edition of 1,000 copies by the Chinese publisher "Commercial Press of China".
