Teachers' salaries in Latvia to be cut by half as of September

Nina Kolyako, BC, Riga, 16.06.2009.Print version
The latest state 2009 budget amendments in Latvia foresee that all teachers' salaries will be reduced by half as of September 1, 2009; thus, the stakes will plummet to LVL 172 per month for one workload.

The current gross monthly salary for teachers with one workload is LVL 345 per month, informs LETA.

Previously, teachers' salaries were intended to be reduced by 20%. However, a decision was taken that during the summer vacations, teachers will continue to receive a full salary as it was before austerity measures were implemented.

Therefore, in order not to exceed the allocated budget, more dramatic cuts will have to be introduced in schools in the last four months of this year. In other state-funded institutions salaries will be curbed already sooner, with the budget amendments coming into force on July 1.

Earmarked subsidies for teachers' salaries will reduce by a total of LVL 95 million.
