The Estonian Ministry of Justice and the University of Tartu entered into a cooperation agreement for the next year with which the ministry will support law studies with 500,000 euros, informed LETA/BNS.

According to the cooperation agreement, the Ministry of Justice will support the development of Estonian-language legal research and classical law studies, the motivation of teaching staff and raising the scientific level in the field of law, spokespeople for the Ministry of Justice said.

"The Ministry of Justice stands to ensure that good quality legal education and research as well as the progeny of highly qualified lawyers is ensured in our country. A low salary rate is forcing teaching staff to work on multiple positions at once and this results in a situation where teaching staff does not have enough time to support the personal development of students and through that, the development of the entire legal system of Estonia suffers," Minister of Justice Urmas Reinsalu said.

"This is a significant contribution by the state to the development of both legal theory as well as legal education," Gaabriel Tavits, professor of social law at the University of Tartu, said. "The given support will create prerequisites for teaching staff and researchers to fully dedicate themselves to further promoting both legal education as well legal theory," he added.
