Lithuanian education minister to resume talks with trade unions on pay model

BC, Vilnius, 29.11.2018.Print version
Lithuanian Education and Science Minister Jurgita Petrauskiene is to hold on Thursday a new round of talks with trade unions on how to improve a new pay model for teachers in place since September.

Following last week's meeting, the ministry prepared a set of proposals and expects it to be approved on Thursday.

However, these proposals have met with criticism from the Lithuanian Education Employees Trade Union, the organizer of an ongoing strike by some teachers. Andrius Navickas, its leader, accuses the ministry of ignoring his demands and says the document was prepared with approval from other trade unions loyal to the ministry.

The strike over what is described as "non-transparent and unfair" pay system is in its third week now.

The ministry says, however, that the new model has allowed raising teachers' wages and better balancing their workload.
