776 general education schools in Latvia open doors

A total of 776 general education establishments began the new school year today and will have altogether 214,414 pupils in Grades 1-12, informs LETA, according to the estimates of the Latvian Education and Science Ministry for the 2017/2018 school year.

The number of first graders this year is 18,744, and the number of high school students (Grades 10-12) is 38,054. In addition, about 900 school students will be pursuing general education at evening schools or extramural schools.

 

The total number of schools includes 297 elementary schools (27 of them private schools), 291 high schools (27 private) and 63 pre-schools (11 private). In addition, there are also 15 municipal and 27 public gymnasiums as well as 26 schools offering second education in the form of evening classes or extramural studies (four private).

 

The number of pre-schoolers is estimated at 94,249, and they will be attending 641 pre-schools, 125 of them private.

 

September 1 is Knowledge Day and marks the beginning of a new school year in Latvia.
