Estonia's University of Tartu rose 33 places compared with 2016 to 314th in the fresh QS World University Rankings.

Compared with 2015, the university has risen 65 places. Taking into account that there are around 26,000 universities in the world, the University of Tartu ranks among the top 1.2 %.

The international consultation company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) uses six indicators to compile the ranking: academic reputation, citations per faculty, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, international faculty ratio and international student ratio.

The University of Tartu improved its result in the ranking of four indicators. An especially big rise was recorded in employer reputation where the school climbed 90 places. The university also improved its result in faculty-student ratio, international student ratio and academic reputation.

QS observed 4,000 universities across the world and ranked 980 of them. The top three is made up of U.S. universities -- the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University and Harvard University -- while the best European university, Cambridge University, ranked fifth.
