OECD: Estonian education's biggest problems are teachers, students not graduating
A big part of funding earmarked for education is spent on
fixed assets, while the percentage of teachers' salaries in operating costs is
small, it appears from the report titled Education at a Glance.
Estonia should also worry about the high average age of
teachers, as the percentage of teachers above the age of 50 in Estonia is one
of the highest among OECD countries.
Estonia also stands out with the declining of the share of
people with a higher education degree. The share of young people aged 25-34
with a university degree has fallen below the OECD average, while in
the age group of 55-64 years Estonia places seventh. The share of young people
who enter a university is above OECD average, while the share of
university students who do not graduate is one of the highest among the
organization's member states.
