MEP Zdanoka: EU needs "renovation"

BC, Riga, 27.03.2014.Print version
In an interview with LETA, European Parliament Member Tatjana Zdanoka (Latvian Union of Russians), who will be running for her third term in the European Parliament, said that the European Union needs "extensive renovation".

According to Zdanoka, it is clear to her that the "construction of the EU is wrong." She believes that the EU cannot have a common currency and common financial policy, as there are just too many differences between EU members.

Zdanoka points out that, according to the Lisbon Treaty, it is possible to call a constitutional convention, where a new EU Constitution could be created, and she believes that this must be done.

The MEP points out that there is limited talk about the battle between left and right during the upcoming EP elections, but between politicians who are pro-EU, and those who are against the EU. She said that those fighting for power will be the ones who wish to see the EU as a federal system, and those who wish to see the EU remain a weak union of independent nations.

According to Zdanoka, a federal structure would ensure an equal economic and financial policy in the territory of the EU.
