US Ambassador Pekala: opportunities for US-Latvian trade

Latvia has genius IT and computer scientists and we’re trying to connect this talent with the investors in Silicon Valley, US ambassador Mark Pekala said during a presentation to 9-12th grade students at the International School of Latvia on Thursday.

As part of the school’s University and Career Counseling distinguished speakers series, Pekala highlighted US-Latvia relations, the daily routine of an ambassador, US exchange students in Latvia, and the most promising opportunities for US-Latvian trade.  “The most promising sectors for bilateral trade are IT, energy, transportation, timber, and manufacturing,” said the ambassador.

“Latvia wants to be a green energy leader,” said Pekala.  “Other key energy issues are the proposed nuclear power plant in Lithuania, and a Liquid Natural Gas terminal.  The main point is lower gas prices and a reduced dependence on Russian energy sources.”

A diplomatic life may not be for everyone and the ambassador mentioned the recent massive attack on the US embassy in Libya.  “Anything can happen anywhere, at any time, for any of us, and diplomats must always be vigilant,” said Pekala.  “Can you be a diplomat if you’re not a citizen?” asked a 10th grade student.  “No, although some countries permit dual citizenship”, said the ambassador.

“Do you need to study in your own country to be a diplomat?” asked an 11th grader. “No, not really because there are so many students like yourself who are studying in another nation.  In fact, with your multilingual talents and global backgrounds you are ideal candidates.  I know lots of American diplomats who did not grow up in the US,” explained Pekala.

Some students were curious about the strength of US-Latvian ties.  The ambassador reassured that, even though there are always some areas of difference among nations, Latvian-US relations are extremely strong.  “With certain nations there can be very serious conflicts, for example, in areas such as human rights and development but there is absolutely nothing like this with Latvia.  The US is in vast agreement with Latvia.  No matter who wins the presidential elections the partnership will remain very strong”, said Pekala.

The ambassador concluded his presentation by promising to respond to any additional questions that students might have.  “Keep in touch!” Pekala said.
