Putin's chief spokesman speaks of possible coup in Latvia

Russian President Vladimir Putin's chief spokesman Dmitry Peskov discussed in an interview on BBC the Ukrainian crisis and its impact on the West-Moscow relations, addressing the theoretical possibility of a coup in Latvia, cites BBC/LETA.

Peskov said that there was a coup in Ukraine, staged and supported by certain western countries, after which Russia was unable to remain neutral. However, this does not mean that Russia wants a Cold War; it should be clear to Russia's adversaries that the country has its own "red line" that cannot be crossed, Peskov said.

The interviewer retorted that the western countries, too, have their own "red line". For example, Latvia. There are serious concerns that what happened in Ukraine, could also happen in Latvia – its ethnic Russian residents could stage a coup against the government.

When asked, whether this is possible, Peskov said that he agrees with these concerns. If someone organizes a coup in Latvia, and Brussels officially recognizes it, as was the case with Ukraine, this will give rise to great danger, Peskov said, adding that if a precedent for a military shift of power is created right in the heart of Europe, the entire continent could be jeopardized.
