Latvian ambassador: situation in Ukraine is improving, but still tense

BC, Riga, 26.09.2014.Print version
Since the ceasefire agreement in Ukraine was reached at the beginning of September, the situation in the country has improved, however, it remains tense, Latvian Ambassador to Ukraine Argita Daudze believes, cites LETA.

''The Ukrainian society is rallying together. The people are in a patriotic mood. Ukrainians are becoming more aware of the importance of their national independence. They understand that independence is something that must be treasured, and we in Latvia must also realize this, as there are many people in the world who do not have this,'' Daudze said in an interview to the weekly magazine ''Sestdiena''.

The ambassador has come to the conclusion that Ukrainians are determined to defend their country and overcome all their hardships, as Russia's aggression has made them more confident that they must strengthen their links with the West and move toward joining the European Union.

''In truth, the military operation is taking place in the east of the country, but remains a localized conflict. The rest of Ukraine is living in peace. Life goes on here, children are going to school, companies continue to work, and cultural events are being organized. Of course, it is not easy, as the conflict is expensive, and people continue to die. Journalists are also responsible to a certain extent, as they are orientated towards eye opening news stories,'' the ambassador said.

According to her, the EU is made up of many countries of different sizes and cultures, but their development models are the same, and based on democracy, market economy and rule of law. Now Ukraine has come to the conclusion that is wishes to go down this road of development.

However, asked whether Ukraine could become an EU member in the future, the ambassador said that she does not have an answer for this question, as no one in the EU can see Ukraine joining the bloc in its current situation.

''That is why we have the Association Agreement in place, as well as other mechanisms in which Ukraine can move closer to this level. Ukraine must use this opportunity for reforms. Latvia once chose this path, and worked hard on achieving it. Ukraine awaits the same fate. However, I see that the government has a very constructive attitude,'' Daudze believes.

The Latvian ambassador also pointed out that this winter season will be crucial for Ukraine, as the country must literally ''survive'' this winter, as there is no clarity regarding the shipments of energy resources. She said that the Latvian Embassy in Kiev is also prepared for crisis situations, as an electricity generator has been purchased.
