Latvian PM confirms desire to continue cooperation with Belarus

Yesterday, Latvian Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma (Unity) met with the Belarus Ambassador to Latvia Marina Dolgopolova, during which the two sides emphasized the good relations between the two countries and expressed desire to continue cooperation with one another, writes LETA.

The two sides were in agreement that economic cooperation, cross-border projects, cooperation in transit and logistics are mutually important to both countries, LETA was informed by the State Chancellery.

 

At the same time, the two sides also admitted that there activity in the area of transit has slowed down, thus current projects must be strengthened.

 

Straujuma said that Latvia has identified the Eastern Partnership initiative as one of its priorities for the upcoming EU presidency, and that this includes cooperation with Belarus.

 

Belarus is Latvia's 10th largest trade partner. In 2013, trade volumes reached the value of EUR 494.3 million, which was about 21.3% less than in 2012.
