Latvia urges Belarus to normalize relations with EU

On Thursday, the political director of the Latvian Foreign Ministry Andrejs Pildegovics made a working visit to Minsk, LETA was informed by the Foreign Ministry's press and information.

As part of his visit, Pildegovics met with Belarus Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei and the Deputy Foreign Minister Alena Kupchyna, as well as representatives from the EU diplomatic corps in Minsk and independent Belarussian experts.

 

At the meeting with the senior officials of the Belarus Foreign Ministry the parties discussed current topics in Latvia-Belarus bilateral cooperation and EU-Belarus cooperation.

 

In the context of bilateral relations, the parties approved of active practical cooperation in a number of areas. The pending matters of bilateral legal framework and economic cooperation were also reviewed. The parties commended the increasing cooperation in promoting people-to-people contacts: the number of visas issued is on the rise, inter-municipal and cross-border cooperation is developing successfully, and the cultural dialogue is taking shape.

 

The talks also covered the current issues of EU and Belarus relations. The Belarussian side was urged to normalize relations with the EU and find a solution to the issue of political prisoners. The parties also discussed the prospects for possible cooperation within the Eastern Partnership and the Modernization Dialogue.
