Latvian Foreign Minister meets with foreign ministers of Norway, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus and Uzbekistan

Yesterday in the Kazakh capital of Astana, on the sidelines of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Summit, Latvian Foreign Minister Girts Valdis Kristovskis held introductory meetings with Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Store, the Foreign Minister of Kyrgyzstan Ruslan Kazakbaev, the Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan Vladimir Norov and the Foreign Minister of Belarus Sergei Martynov, LETA was informed by the Foreign Ministry's press and information center.

During the meeting with the Norwegian foreign minister, both parties expressed their high opinion of the achievements to date and the current potential of Nordic-Baltic cooperation. Kristovskis told his Norwegian colleague about Latvia's efforts towards the stabilization of the economy. Military cooperation between both countries in Afghanistan was also commended. Both ministers recognized that the good relations between the two countries allow further expanding of other aspects of bilateral cooperation, including economic contacts.

 

During the meeting with the Uzbek foreign minister, the two sides reviewed bilateral relations. Kristovskis emphasized that Latvia is interested in expanding economic cooperation with Central Asia, Uzbekistan in particular, which is a significant and promising cooperation partner in the region. The Latvian foreign minister offered for consideration an idea of opening commercial centers in the country. The parties emphasized the significance of the non-military transit route through Uzbekistan to Afghanistan. The two sides also agreed that there were a number of other fields, including education, where both countries could successfully cooperate.

 

While meeting with the Kyrgyz foreign minister, Kristovskis expressed hope that Kyrgyzstan would achieve the stabilization of political situation in the country. The Latvian foreign minister emphasized that stability in Central Asia is in Latvia's interests, as Central Asia was not only a region with a huge potential for economic cooperation, but also a territory neighboring Afghanistan. Kristovskis emphasized that Kyrgyz authorities should honor international commitments, also those concerning Latvian investments in the country. The foreign minister of Kyrgyzstan expressed an interest to develop cooperation between the parliaments of both countries, as part of which Kyrgyzstan could take over the experience of the Saeima's work.

 

On the other hand, the Latvian foreign minister and the Belarusian foreign minister discussed bilateral relations and recent international developments. Both parties agreed that the countries have common economic interests and in a number of other areas. Kristovskis emphasized that Latvia will shape its relations with Belarus both as a neighbor and also in view of the EU's political principles, including the Eastern Partnership initiative. The ministers discussed a topic of interest to Belarus, namely, oil present in the Ventspils –Polotsk pipeline. Kristovskis noted that it was in Latvia's interests that the oil pipeline was operational, and a speedy and lawful solution would be achieved in resolving the issue.
