When meeting with the minister of foreign affairs of Kazakhstan Kanat Saudabayev, the Estonian minister Urmas Paet stated that Kazakhstan is an important co-operation partner for Estonia in Central Asia, reported BC the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Urmas Paet.

Paet informed Saudabayev that an Estonian consul started work in Astana – the first time when an Estonian diplomat has been working in Kazakhstan and in Central Asia at large.

Paet noted that relations between the two countries have developed at a fast pace. “The Estonian-Kazakh Inter-Governmental Committee has started work and soon an agreement on protection of investments will be signed,” said the Estonian minister.

He asserted that there are a number of opportunities in the economic co-operation – such as in the fields of transit, information technology and oil shale.

Paet recognised Kazakhstan as the Presidency of OSCE for what it has done in resolving the conflict in Kyrgyzstan.

Estonia also considers it important to develop relations between the European Union and Kazakhstan – the conclusion of a framework agreement as well as launching visa facilitation negotiations.

“European Union’s relations with Kazakhstan could be an example for relations of other countries in Central Asia with the European Union,” added Paet.

Estonia also supports the aspirations of Kazakhstan to become a member of WTO.

Paet invited minister Saudabayev for a visit to Estonia.
