Latvia signs an agreement with the Council of Europe on support for Ukraine

On 9 December in Strasbourg, the Ambassador of Latvia to the Council of Europe (CoE), Rolands Lappuke signed on behalf of Latvia an agreement with the Council of Europe on Latvia’s contribution of EUR 15 000 to the CoE Action Plan for Ukraine 2015-2017, informed BC the Latvian MFA.

On behalf of the Council of Europe, the agreement was signed by Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, Deputy Secretary General.

 

After signing of the document, Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni expressed her appreciation of Latvia’s support for the CoE Action Plan for Ukraine and added that assistance from the Council of Europe is highly welcomed by Ukraine and therefore, joint efforts are essential in continued support for the country in its process of implementing democratic reforms.

 

Being aware that the CoE Action Plan for Ukraine 2015-2017 is in line with Ukraine’s individual needs and requirements, Latvia continues providing its contribution to putting in place the reforms in Ukraine.

 

The Action Plan for Ukraine 2015–2017 is a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and Ukrainian authorities the aim of which is, by various measures and projects, to strengthen democratic governance, carry out reforms in the justice sector and promote human rights. The initiative is to be funded by contributions from CoE member states and international donors.

 

Latvia will make its contribution to the Action Plan for Ukraine 2015–2017 on the basis of the Cabinet of Ministers Decree No. 253 of 12 May 2015.

 

This is the second consecutive year that Latvia is making these contributions.
