Deputy MFA of Lithuania, Ukraine discuss development of bilateral relations

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Mantvydas Bekesius in Kyiv met with First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Nataliia Galibarenko. The meeting addressed implementation of the Minsk Agreement, preparation for Ukrainian local election of 25 October, prospects of bilateral relations between Lithuania and Ukraine, reports BC the Lithuanian MFA.

According to Bekesius, Russia has not fulfilled its obligations provided for in the Minsk Agreements as Ukraine has not been granted control over its borders and the Russian forces have not withdrawn from its territory. The Lithuanian deputy foreign minister said that the annexation of Crimea is often being forgotten in the backdrop of global crises, however, Lithuania has been actively raising the issue in international forums and is ready to continue supporting Ukraine striving for the restoration of its territorial integrity.

 

Bekesius emphasised that in the future Lithuania will continue providing both expert and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine He stressed that particular attention is being devoted for the cooperation between Lithuania's and Ukraine's regions.

 

The Lithuanian deputy foreign minister urged Ukraine to continue reforms despite external pressure. He said that the people of Ukraine expect its government to continue combating corruption, implementing the judiciary reform and improving business environment.

 

On Thursday the deputy minister will open Lithuania's honorary consulate in Ivano-Frankivsk and will meet with local government representatives from Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk.
