Straujuma said that she felt on Maidan Nezalezhnosti Square what she felt during the Awakening period in Latvia. The sense of national unity was felt in Ukraine as well. "But at the same time, it was depressing, as so many lives have been erased, the country is dominated by violence, peaceful citizens are dying. How is it possible that in the 21st century Europe, a state is being stripped from a piece of its territory, what interests lie behind this, what of this lust for power?" the prime minister shared her emotions.

She highly praised the school's students for their Latvian language skills, as well as their interest to refine their Ukrainian language skills and culture.

During her visit at the Riga Ukrainian School, Straujuma especially addressed those students, who arrived in Latvia with their families in order to escape the conflict zones in Ukraine. She consoled them that they can feel safe in Latvia.
