Latvian MFA: EU continues to consider annexation of Crimea illegal

BC, Riga, 07.01.2015.Print version
The European Union (EU) has a joint opinion of the necessity to continue considering the annexation of Crimea as illegal, the Foreign Ministry's press secretary Karlis Eihenbaums told LETA.

Eihenbaums said that the EU and Latvia's aim is to normalize the relations with Russia.

"How this will be done, largely depends on the developments in Eastern Ukraine. This, in turn, depends on Russia's constructive involvement in solving the conflict," Eihenbaums explained, adding that a long-term solution to the conflict in Eastern Ukraine can be achieved only through political means and by fully observing Ukraine's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. It is also important for the EU to have a joint opinion.

The conflict will be solved only by following the Minsk agreement, fully observing the ceasefire, and if Russia pulls out its mercenaries and armed forces from Ukraine's territory.

"The EU has a common opinion of the necessity to continue considering the annexation of Crimea illegal," Eihenbaums said.
