Rõivas: Nordic and Baltic states should together reduce dependency on Russia

Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas said on Thursday at a meeting with Nordic Council of Ministers secretary general Dagfinn Høybråten that the Nordic and Baltic states should accelerate cooperation for creating energy and transport connections that would reduce dependency on Russia, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

The officials talked about the security situation in Europe and energy and transport connections that are becoming more important. They also talked about cooperation projects of Nordic Council of Ministers and Estonia.

 

Rõivas stressed that it is extremely important to show unity of the Nordic and Baltic states now. "The current security situation should give an impetus to all Nordic and Baltic states that have a common border with Russia to accelerate projects, both in the issues of Balticconnector and location of LNG terminals and the Rail Baltic issue," said Rõivas.

 

Rõivas said that the Tallinn office of the Nordic Council of Ministers has created an impressive network for finding the best active cooperation projects in Estonia. He said that the population migration project is a good example here. He said that Estonians value highly the chance to study and work abroad and the state's interest should be to encourage people to get experiences abroad. On the other hand the government aims to increase the standard of living in Estonia which should improve the quality of life people who have been forced to leave Estonia for work.
