Lithuania and Hungary share similar positions on Eastern partnership and other key issues

Lithuania and Hungary are interested in accelerating the development of the Eastern Partnership, the countries share similar positions on many issues that the European Union and NATO focus on, and the bilateral relations should grow stronger when Lithuania takes over the helm of the EU Council, informed BC the press service Lithuanian MFA.

These issues were emphasized during the meeting between the Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevicius and Hungary's Ambassador to Lithuania Zoltan Pecze on May 7.

 

The Foreign Minister thanked Hungary for sharing the country's valuable experience of holding the Presidency of the EU Council and reminded about the basic objectives of the Lithuanian Presidency.

 

Lithuania's Presidency will start in July and will mainly focus on the creation of a credible, growing and open Europe.

 

Speaking of the latter priority, the head of the Lithuanian diplomacy invited Hungary to participate at the highest possible political level in the Eastern Partnership Summit, which is to be held in November in Vilnius. The Ambassador assures of his country’s interest in a successful Eastern Partnership policy development and offered Hungary’s support for achieving common goals.

 

The officials highlighted the close bilateral cooperation between Lithuania and Hungary, similar positions on many issues that the European Union and NATO focus on.

The Foreign Minister and the Ambassador also discussed possible joint initiatives during the period of Lithuania’s EU Presidency and during the Hungarian Presidency in the Visegrad Group, a Central European constellation.
