The Cabinet of Ministers is to hold an extraordinary meeting tonight to decide on the Economics Ministry's proposal to close household goods stores at shopping centers on weekends during the Covid-19 state of emergency, governmental representative Reinis Gravitis informed LETA.

At the government meeting, which has been called by Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity), ministers will be surveyed on the Economics Ministry's proposal to add the closure of household goods stores at shopping centers on weekends to the set of restrictions introduced in Latvia's to curb the coronavirus.

After the extraordinary Cabinet meeting, which is expected to end at 21:00, the Economics Ministry will report on the decision taken by the government.

On Friday afternoon, Economics Minister Janis Vitenbergs (KPV LV) called for keeping household goods stores closed on weekends, LETA was told at the Economics Ministry.

Although the government decree on the state of emergency does not ban household goods stores from working on weekends, the economics minister called for keeping these stores closed on weekends, citing reports of retailers' careless attitude to the Covid-19 restrictions.

As reported, to curb the spread of Covid-19 in Latvia, the government has declared a state of emergency, effective from November 9 to December 6.
