Saeima today approved the government's decision to ease Covid-19 restrictions on face-to-face activities in education, sports and amateur arts as of June 1.

Opposition lawmakers criticized the plan for not including permission to reopen children's entertainment venues, while gambling operators are likely to be allowed to resume their business soon.

The Education and Science Ministry and the Culture Ministry have worked out a detailed regulation, which will include specific requirements for activities in education, sports and amateur arts.

As reported, on May 21. the Cabinet of Ministers decided to allow group workouts for adult athletes who are members of the Latvian national teams, Latvia's Olympic Team or Paralympic Team, as well as members of sports teams with contracts. The exception does not apply to combat sports.

The requirement to observe the two meter distancing protocol will not apply to these athletes.

Also from June 1, education institutions will be allowed to organize face-to-face state examinations, including professional qualification exams and enrollment examinations at high schools, including for vocational programs.

Universities and colleges will also be able to organize face-to-face examinations that cannot be held remotely.

Children's summer camps will also be permitted as of June 1.

Face-to-face learning will be allowed in professional further education, adult informal education and hobby education.

Amateur artists like choristers, dancers, orchestra musicians, singers, amateur theater groups and others will be allowed to engage in group activities again from June 1.
