Estonian formin: Baltic states planning to reenable travel within Schengen area in June

BC, Tallinn, 28.05.2020.Print version
Baltic foreign ministers share the position that residents of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania should be able to travel within the Schengen area from June, according to Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Reinsalu writes LETA/BNS.

If the move is endorsed by the Baltic governments, traveling abroad within Europe and returning home will no longer be restricted for Baltic citizens, the minister said.

"The second decision concerns quarantine. Pursuant to the present proposal, a quarantine requirement will be imposed on people arriving from states where the infection rate has been over 15 per 100,000 residents for the past two weeks," Reinsalu said, adding that according to the latest statistics said states are Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal, Ireland, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Sweden.

The minister added that the quarantine requirement would also apply to Estonian residents.

"And when the infection rates decline, the quarantine requirement will be eliminated as well," he said.

Restrictions on international air transport would remain in place, according to the minister.

With regard to travelling to and from non-Schengen countries, Reinsalu said that in accordance with the joint position of European states, a travel ban will remain in force until June 15.

"Beyond that, we'll see -- discussions are already underway. Our starting point is that the Baltic states will try to proceed together," the minister said.
