The parties discussed several issues, including bilateral relations and their future development. One of the topics was Latvia’s diaspora in Ireland. Vejonis said that there are about 30,000 Latvian citizens living in Ireland and Latvia wants to promote their return back home. Vejonis said that Ireland already has experience in similar issues.

The presidents also discussed the EU and its future, the EU multiannual budget and Brexit. Vejonis said that Latvia and Ireland share a common stance on these issues, and it is important for them to ensure rights of their citizens after Brexit.

Vejonis said that both countries have a good potential for further practical cooperation in such areas as culture, education, trade, economy, green economy, and climate change.

Higgins said that he is honored to participate in celebration of Latvia’s centenary. He thanked Vejonis for Latvia’s solidarity in several important EU issues, adding that the EU member states should be active in talks about the EU future, and this especially refers to the small countries.

The Irish president also thanked Latvians living in Ireland for their contribution to the country’s economy, and said that there is a huge potential for even closer cooperation between both countries.

Higgins and his wife Sabina Coyne-Higgins are on a state visit to Latvia.
