EU imposes sanctions on Venezuela
"The
European Union has been following recent developments in Venezuela with
concern. Establishing sanctions is necessary for applying pressure on Venezuela
so that they find a solution to the political and economic crisis,"
Estonian Foreign Minister Sven Mikser
was quoted by spokespeople as saying.
The EU placed an embargo on military goods, and
equipment and communication that may be used for internal repression, as well
as a prohibition on provision of related services. In addition, a legal
framework allows the Council of the EU to impose travel restrictions and asset
freezes for specific individuals. "The EU is prepared to support all steps
on the regional and broader international level that could contribute to
finding a solution," Mikser affirmed.
"It is important that all parties in Venezuela
start looking for ways of resolving the crisis and that they do so while
respecting the democratic framework, principles of rule of law and human
rights," Mikser said. "The most important thing is to immediately
cease the violations and repressions that are causing unnecessary suffering for
the Venezuelan people."
Reports, such as one from the UN High Commissioner for
Human Rights, indicate significant violations of human rights and fundamental
freedoms, including the right to food and healthcare.
