A court of first instance is due to start hearing the case of the Senator, a Latvian trawler that has been arrested by Norwegian authorities for catching crab in a disputed territory, tomorrow, the ship's owner Peteris Pildegovics told LETA.

"The court of first instance will hold the hearing on the arrested Senator on May 4," he said.

Representatives of the Agriculture Ministry confirmed that the court hearing is scheduled to take place tomorrow and that for the time being there are no other news concerning the case.

Normunds Riekstins, director of the Agriculture Ministry's Fisheries Department, told earlier that Norway has accused the boat owner of violating rules on fisheries - a claim that has been rejected by the Latvian party as the Senator was crabbing off the Svalbard (Spitzbergen) archipelago in accordance with the 1920 Svalbard Treaty and the European Union's regulations.

As reported, the Latvian crab trawler was arrested on January 16 this year for catching snow crab in Norwegian waters around the Svalbard (Spitzbergen) archipelago. The Norwegians insist that the Latvian vessel had been fishing there illegally while Latvia maintains the fishermen had been acting in compliance with international agreements.
