Support to be paid to Lithuania after 2020 yet undecided

BC, Vilnius, 13.06.2016.Print version
It is yet too early to say whether the support to Lithuania from the European Union's (EU) structural funds will be decreased from the current level in 2020-2026, as the guidelines and directions of the financing for the period are not yet clear, says European Commission (EU) official Ieva Cerniute, cites LETA/BNS.

"It seems like the position of the Cohesion policy among all policies will probably be revised. If it decreases or increases, Lithuania will possibly get more or less. I believe that the sum will not remain unchanged. There are too many uncertainties at the moment but we should start preparations now," Cerniute, the head of the Lithuania Program at the European Commission's Regional Policy Directorate, told BNS Lithuania.

In her words, EC will publish its opinion in 2018 on the financial perspective for the period, followed by negotiations on the distribution of the money from Structural Funds across the EU.

"Everything depends on the agreed single financing policies. Then (they will consider) principles for distribution of funding and, by the situation, we will see what Lithuania can apply for," Cerniute added.

In 2014-2020, Lithuania has secured 8.39 billion euros in support from the European Structural and Investment Funds. The country's government will co-finance 1.56 billion euros over the period.

The funds are the EU's main investment instrument, totaling at 454 billion euros in the current financial period.
