BC, Tallinn, 22.01.2016.Print version
Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves stressed while speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland that Ukraine needs long-term and united support as well as patience to encourage carrying out reforms in the country, informs LETA/BNS.

Ilves named as important the steps that have been taken in Ukraine in the fields of energy, security and finance in the past year and a half, spokespeople for the president said. At the same time he stressed that there is still a long way to go to move on from promising signs to a lasting success story.

The Minsk agreements have not been fulfilled, fighting is still ongoing in eastern Ukraine, nearly 400 kilometers of state border is not under the control of the Ukrainian government, there are more than 1.5 million internal refugees, Crimea has been annexed –- in the background of it all one might not notice the forecasts according to which the steep decline of the Ukrainian economy is halting, Ilves said.

In the light of that it is extremely important to preserve the long-term and united support of all the friends of Ukraine for the Ukrainian economy as well as the foreign political environment.

Ilves was asked to speak at the Ukraine discussion about Estonia's reform experience and the employment of IT solutions in governance.

Other speakers at the discussion were Ukrainian Minister of Economy and Trade Aivaras Abromavicius, Finance Minister Natalia Ann Jaresko and European Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn.
