Prospects for development of relations between Lithuania and Germany discussed in Vilnius

On 6 October in Vilnius, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Neris Germanas met with the delegation of German Bundestag's Parliamentary Friendship Group for Relations with the Baltic States led by its Chair Alois Karl, the MFA reported BC.

During the meeting, the officials discussed prospects for bilateral cooperation, refugee issues and how to address them, the situation in Ukraine, relations with Russia, the Eastern Neighbourhood, regional and energy security.

 

According to Germanas, Germany is Lithuania's important partner in the EU and NATO, therefore, it is necessary to use the potential of bilateral relations and to deepen cooperation in the fields of security, economy and other areas. Lithuania's deputy foreign minister underscored the importance of Germany's support for Lithuania in ensuring its energy independence and developing infrastructure connections.

 

Germanas stressed the importance of Germany's role in ensuring regional security and implementing decisions taken at the NATO Summit in Wales. He thanked Germany for its participation in NATO's air policing mission over the Baltic States, and for the German contingent's participation in military exercises in Lithuania.

 

During the meeting, the officials discussed the conflict in Ukraine and relations with Russia. Germanas stressed the need to maintain the current long-term EU's sanctions against Russia until the implementation of the Minsk agreements and the stabilisation of the situation.
