Dombrovskis: Eurozone members ready to review Greece's debt conditions

BC, Riga, 29.07.2015.Print version
In an interview with LETA, European Commission Vice President and Commissioner for the Euro and Social Dialogue Valdis Dombrovskis said that eurozone members are ready to look into reviewing Greece's debt conditions, however, without writing-off the principal amount.

Speaking about the restructuring of Greece's debt, Dombrovskis reminded that the European Commission is not a creditor, but the European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund, as well as eurozone members like Germany. ''This is more of a matter to be decided by the creditors,'' Dombrovskis said, reminding about the recent IMF report which points out to the necessity to restructure Greece's debt. However, he also reminded that in its reports, the IMF usually recommends the restructuring of other loans, never its own.

''This has substantial importance, but other creditors might have a different point of view on this matter. In regard to the procedure itself, already in 2012 the Eurogroup made the decision to review Greece's debt conditions after the successful completion of its second loan program, and whether or not these conditions should be eased,'' he said.

However, Dombrovskis points out that loan program was not successfully completed, meaning that this offer was not on the table anymore. ''However, during our recent Eurogroup meeting, we decided to put this offer back on the table. After making their conclusion, eurozone members are prepared to review Greece's debt conditions, however, without writing-off the principal amount,'' he said.
