Rõivas: Estonia will not support reduction of Greek loans

Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas said that the Greek government has to abandon its rigid line, continuing it will not do any good for the state, LETA/Delfi reports.

Rõivas said in a short interview to Delfi and Eesti Päevaleht that he is not going to submit any proposals to the parliament that would enable Greece to abandon the required reforms and just hope for the good life to continue.

"The Estonian government cannot support any solutions that would result in the elimination of conditionality or reduction of loans. Continuation of reforms is in Greece's own interests. And Estonia is not alone in such a rigid stance, as much as I have communicated with my colleagues, others share it also. There is no reason to expect a situation where the European Union all of a sudden says that reforms are no longer needed," said Rõivas.

Rõivas said, commenting upon the possibility that Greece could exit the euro area, that ordinary Greek people would lose the most in this case. "But I do not want to imagine or conjure this situation. If we look at the Greek GDP and wage levels, then it is obvious that it will bring no good," said Rõivas adding that "I also believe that Greece has actually understood the euro zone message".

"Yes, if Greece needs extra time to implement some reforms, for example, then it is possible to allow that. However, there is no point in waiting for the Estonian parliament to submit a position to the parliament that let the good life go on. At least not from the current government," said Rõivas.
