Edgars Rinkevics asserted that every effort should be made to put an end to hostilities in eastern Ukraine by political and diplomatic means and by looking also to new ways and new formats to achieve this end. Meanwhile, the Minsk agreements remain as a basis for the cessation of hostilities in the east of Ukraine.

The 28 member states of the European Union each have their own standpoints and perspectives, and in the hopes of achieving a common position, discussions are currently underway on the possible tightening of sanctions against Russia and expanding the list of persons subject to sanctions, and these will be revealed at the 9 February Foreign Affairs Council.

Recognising that a number of initiatives are currently in place to de-escalate the situation and create a path to a political solution, Minister Steinmeier stressed that all are interested in ending hostilities in the east of Ukraine and it is necessary to find the ways and means to stop the conflict.
